Born 1950 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While working on a BBA degree from UW-Milwaukee I spent many an evening on the basement floor of UWM’s library, poring over books by such photographers as Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Ralph Eugene Meatyard and August Sander. I’ve been photographing ever since.
From 1976 - 1985, I worked as a laborer in varied work environments such as harvesting, ranching and on ore boats laid up at Jones Island, in Milwaukee's harbor. These unique work environments enabled me to shoot not as a disengaged photographer viewing a scene, but as one immersed in the work place itself. These projects represent an effort to frankly and directly capture the essence of laborers in their work and the hard, surrealistic beauties of their workplace.
While in Milwaukee, I extensively documented the performances of both Wild Space Dance Company and Present Music and covered social, economic, and arts issues for such alternative presses like Art Muscle, Milwaukee Weekly, Shepherd Express and the Progressive Magazine and also main stream magazines like Corporate Report Wisconsin, Milwaukee Magazine and the J/S Sunday magazine.
I most recently documented the construction of the Milwaukee Art Museum's Calatrava addition from 1998 - 2003 and the construction of Columbia St. Mary’s new hospital from 2005 - 2010.
Though for the past 25 years I've been employed as a photographer/graphic artist at Marquette University's School of Dentistry, I continue to explore life through photography and have in the past been the recipient of Wisconsin Arts Board project grants and a NEA visual arts fellowship.
